Daniel Holwell writes and reviews every guide on this site. He worked on the tools before moving into teaching, and has spent nearly twenty years teaching plumbing and domestic heating in UK further education.
Teaching and quality assurance
Daniel managed Building Services provision and carried out quality assurance across his college group's three campuses, covering curriculum design, assessment quality and standardisation from Level 1 through to Level 3.
He holds the Level 3 assessor and Level 4 internal quality assurer awards, and quality assures gas learners — so the guides here are written by someone who marks the evidence, not only someone who teaches the topic.
He is an Expert Practitioner, holds a CMI Level 5 in Operations Management, and a Level 3 in Coaching and Mentoring.
Trade credentials
Daniel is gas-registered, holding core gas safety and four appliance categories. Alongside the gas tickets he holds the qualifications for the systems the trade is moving to:
- Water Regulations
- Unvented hot water
- Heat pumps
- Solar thermal
- Low temperature hot water
Why this site exists
PlumbMate started because the same misconceptions came up every single year — fluid categories, trap seal loss, the difference between a system and a regular boiler — and the textbooks were not fixing them. Every guide here is built around the mistakes Daniel has watched learners make in the workshop and in the exam hall, not around what ranks well in a search engine.
Corrections
Standards move, and a guide written last year can be wrong this year. If you spot something that is out of date or simply wrong, say so: info@plumbmatemastery.co.uk. Guides are updated and the change date is shown on the post.
