2. Built by a practising FE educator

PlumbMate is not built by a generalist EdTech team; it is built by someone teaching the qualification it covers. Decisions about content, sequencing, tutor tools and assessment design are made by an active practitioner who is in front of learners every week.

Founder & Curriculum Lead
Daniel Holwell

Currently teaching City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing at a London FE college. PlumbMate's curriculum, quizzes and tutor tools are designed from this perspective.

  • Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) qualified
  • Expert Practitioner status
  • Active classroom teaching role
  • Building Services Curriculum Manager experience

3. Designed for the way tutors actually teach

The tutor-facing tools were specified from real classroom needs, not retrofitted to a consumer learning app:

📊
Class & learner heatmaps See exactly which learning outcomes a class or individual is weakest on, mapped to City & Guilds LO/AC.
📝
AI teaching plan generator Generate session plans targeted at the topics the data shows a class needs most.
🔁
Spaced retrieval revision Three-session mastery model with a four-hour gap rule, applied across every unit.
🏁
Final challenges & certificates Forty-question end-of-unit assessments at 85% pass mark, with downloadable certificates.
🏆
Leaderboards & group streaks Tutor-configurable engagement features with anonymity toggles and weekly resets.
✍️
AI-marked short answers Open written responses graded against a marking rubric with per-question explanation feedback.

4. Safeguarding & age-appropriate design

Plumbing apprentices commonly start training at 16 or 17. PlumbMate is designed with that age range in mind, following the principles of the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code (the Children's Code):

Tutor accounts can see learner engagement and progress within their own college, supporting the safeguarding oversight responsibilities colleges already have. Full detail in our Privacy Policy.

5. Data protection & security

The technical controls below are documented in a written Information Security Policy and underpin our Cyber Essentials certification:

🔐
Multi-factor authentication Enforced on every administrative cloud service used to operate PlumbMate.
🌍
UK / EU data hosting Firebase (Google Cloud) with EU-US Data Privacy Framework safeguards; Stripe PCI-DSS Level 1 for payments.
🔄
Encryption in transit and at rest TLS for all connections; data encrypted by the cloud provider's managed encryption.
📅
Patching within 14 days Operating systems, browsers, anti-malware and applications all set to auto-update.
🚨
72-hour breach notification Written incident response process. ICO notified within 72 hours if there is a risk to data subjects.
📡
NCSC Early Warning Subscribed to the NCSC's free threat intelligence service for our domain.

A Data Processing Agreement is available for college subscriptions. Full subprocessor list, legal bases and your rights as a data subject are documented in our Privacy Policy.

6. Accessibility & inclusive design

FE colleges have legal obligations under the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (commonly "WCAG 2.2 AA"). Tools recommended to students should meet the same bar.

PlumbMate has been audited and remediated against WCAG 2.2 AA across 100+ pages and components. We publish an open Accessibility Statement covering known issues, contact routes and our remediation commitments.
